Candy Matson was a no-nonsense female detective who solved crimes with the best of her hard-boiled male counterparts on radio like: Philip Marlowe, Pat Novak and Sam Spade. Voiced by Natalie Park Masters, Candy Matson never compromised her femininity but she did now how to handle a gun and didn’t hesitate to use one when it was necessary. She didn’t take any guff from the guys – the good guys or the bad guys. Candy was fearless, never hesitating to go wherever she needed to solve a case from the lowest dive to the classiest nightclub. She was obviously gorgeous because she attracted men like flies. Her best friend and partner in detection was flamboyant photographer Rembrandt Watson. All private eyes need a police detective foil and, in Candy’s case, that was Lt. Ray Mallard. It didn’t hurt that she and Mallard were attracted to one another. Candy Matson Detective (sometimes referred to as Candy Matson – Yukon 2-8209) aired on NBC from 1949 until 1951. Natalie Park Masters’ real-life husband, Monty Masters, wrote the show.
